Beyond the Binary
The Reading Wars Were Never the Real Fight
For forty years we have staged the same argument. Phonics or whole language. Skills or meaning. Decoding or comprehension. Each generation of educators inherits the fight, picks a side, and swings the pendulum back the other way — certain that the last group got it wrong.
Here is the uncomfortable truth underneath all of it: the reading wars were never really about the science. They were about its implementation. And every swing of the pendulum has left teachers feeling attacked rather than supported, and left students with a literacy education assembled from disconnected parts.
The binary was always false
Phonics and comprehension were never opposing camps. They are two points on one continuous developmental arc — from sound, to symbol, to language, to meaning, to reasoning. A five-year-old blending three sounds into her first word and a high schooler weighing the logic of an argument are not doing different things called "reading." They are at different points on the same climb.
When we treat those points as separate programs — early reading over here, "real" reading over there — we build exactly the gap our data keeps exposing. Strong primary gains that flatten by fourth grade. Middle schoolers who can pronounce every word on the page and understand none of it. The problem isn't that one side of the old debate was right and the other wrong. The problem is that we keep arguing about points on a line instead of building the whole line.
Adding more sciences won't fix a missing spine
There's a healthy instinct in the field right now to say the science of reading, by itself, isn't enough — that we need to fold in more: how the brain learns, how instruction is best designed, how systems change. All of that is true and worth doing. But breadth is not the same as coherence. You can assemble every relevant science and still hand teachers a pile of parts.
What holds the parts together isn't another framework layered on top. It's a developmental spine — a shared understanding of how a reader actually grows, from automaticity to comprehension to reasoning, and what instruction each phase requires. Without that spine, "more" just means more initiatives. With it, every science finds its place on the continuum.
The bridge is where systems break
If there's one place to look first, it's the middle. Between decoding and deep comprehension lies a bridge most systems never explicitly build: morphology, syntax, academic vocabulary, and fluency that serves meaning rather than speed. We teach children to sound out words in the early grades, then quietly assume the bridge will build itself. It doesn't. The students who "read the words but not the meaning" were never taught to cross.
Naming that bridge — and deciding, grade band by grade band, who owns each part of it — is some of the most productive work a literacy team can do. It turns a vague worry ("our comprehension scores are soft") into a concrete, teachable set of skills.
From debate to design
The move I'm asking leaders to make is from debate to design. Stop relitigating which half of reading matters more. Start designing the continuum that carries a child across all of it — and then align curriculum, intervention, assessment, professional learning, and leadership behind that single arc.
A literacy system can be strong in parts and still incoherent as a whole. Coherence is not another initiative to adopt. It's the decision to stop treating reading as a war to win and start treating it as a continuum to build.
Because in the end, the point was never to settle the argument. The point was always the child at the end of it — the one we want to graduate able to read not just the word, but the world.
